I have a Plan

So it has been pretty evident that I have not done a lot of training of late, my training consisted of various race entries and team runs during the week, which has led to marginal improvement, I still however cannot consistently run a sub 10 minute mile, yes I have runs where I do achieve this, but it seems to be hit and miss, with no determinable factors.

When I look back through the races and times over the last couple of years, it seems that I was running comfortably last September, where I then injured myself and took three months out to recover, from that point to now I have gained just over a stone in weight, which I believe has slowed me down somewhat.

From the start of this year I have made gradual improvements, but nothing worth shouting about, I know that too improve I just need to add more miles, and the only way to do this is to get out there and run. Anyone who has a family knows that it is a balancing act between allocating time to running and time to family, and mine has been very accommodating in letting me do this, for which I am extremely grateful and lucky.

So to the plan………I need to get more miles/runs in, I also need to take a good look at my dietary needs. So to start with the only way I can get more runs in, is to run early Saturday and Sunday Morning (I am not an early run type of person, and really struggle with my energy), and too also swat up on some books concerning running and eating, I will start with “The Runners World Cookbook” and see how i progress.

If anyone has any useful tips, then add them in the comments.

Happy running.

  1. This is my view on this topic.
Ideally, you do not need to be running no more than 2-3 times a week, you need to have your rest days in there as well.
Improvement/miles – This all depends on what your goals are. We all have different goals and reasons why we run. whether it is a PB or to run as many miles in a month as you can, hitting the miles does not mean improvement in times.
Finding time to run, this is a difficult one considering you want to give good family time as well.
So if you can make the club runs and then either a Saturday/Sunday. Now whatever day you choose to run use the other day for family time. has it got to be early in the morning or can it be mid afternoon/evening?

Diet- This has not got to be anything drastic, but in my opinion, has to be developed alongside exercise? i.e Running. Maybe just a case of eating a little bit more sensible, cutting down on fried food.Obviously depending on your dietary needs, if you have any at all.

Now bearing this in mind you can read different books to get a dietary plan in place or talk to people who have expertise in this field. I know kelly is really good but might be a bit busy being pregnant or I have a load of emails sent to me, which I have not gone through yet from max before he went to Aussie land, which I am sure would help, more than happy to forward onto you, as well anything else in the emails.

Now you need to have a think of goals you want to achieve, whether it is weight, PBS and put these into a training plan, I know it is hard, but you need to maybe be a little selfish on club runs and get out of it what you want rather than helping others all the time.

If I can help at all and fancy a chat about any of this, I am always available for a chat over a beer or coffee anytime.
My apologies for the long reply.

    • Cheers Keith much appreciated, will give this some though and formulate a plan, i guess at the moment, I have 3 main goals
      1. Loose weight
      2. Consistently run a sub 9 minute mile (a bit of a wish this one) or there abouts.
      3. Be able to run a 4 hour Marathon.
      4. Be abled to run an ultra.
      O.K. i lied 4 goals.

      • As I see it losing weight will co-inside with your running.
1- weight, start with a meal plan for a weeks/month and I am sure with the running you will lose weight.
2- 9 min mile is a good goal, you need to gradually train for this, and I’m sure you can do this.
3- I am sure you can hit a 4-hour marathon, but then you will need to maybe do a time per mile that you can complete the event.
4- Ultra’s not something I have thought about less about time, but more about mileage.
nice goals there, but in my opinion, you may have to choose between option 2 or aim for option 3 and 4.
